Thursday, Day 4, was set to be Team HKEX’s busiest and most high profile day of the week at the World Economic Forum, with a number of high profile official speaking engagements and media interviews. Plus two of our own hosted events – Hong Kong Perspectives Night, and a WEF-affiliated Panel on responsible sourcing hosted by the LME.
And as our activity jotted up, so did the weather! The ice turned to slush, the sunglasses came out and the bright blue skies shone on the 3,000 delegates for this penultimate day of the annual meeting.
Chairman Laura Cha kicked off day 4 with an early official WEF panel alongside panellists exploring what stakeholder capitalism means in Asia. She discussed HKEX’s commitment to taking a leadership role as a market operator and a listed company in promoting this rounded approach to performance and sustainability.
Shortly after, Chief Executive Charles Li gave an impassioned contribution to an impressive panel on globalization, which explored how business and society must prepare for the evolving landscape. Joined by speakers from Canada, Australia, and the USA, Li stressed that collaboration and trust would be key to tackling global issues such as climate change and wealth inequality, as “we cannot go backwards on globalization”.
LME Chief Executive Matt Chamberlain hosted a very well attended afternoon session on sustainability in metals and mining at the ‘Ice Village’, the new futuristic WEF venue. Joined by industry heavyweights, as well as Juan Yermo, Deputy Chief of Staff of the OECD, the panel lead a passionate and engaging discussion with attendees, looking into how producers, consumers, market structure providers, policymakers, IGOs, and NGOs should all work together to promote change in driving a more sustainable metals and mining ecosystem.
International media activities continued: Li had a lively discussion with CNN International’s Julia Chatterley on how technology plays a role in driving global financial markets, and Cha had another discussion with Bloomberg’s Haslinda Amin on what it takes for female leaders to rise to the top in today’s world.
Elsewhere the team met with a number of HKEX’s global partners, prospects and customers. And Hong Kong night at the end!
