Day 1 dawned cold and bright and saw the formal kick-off of this year’s World Economic Forum in Davos, along with the arrival of the full HKEX team in the Swiss mountains for an action-packed week ahead.

Team HKEX had a final planning session over lunch and then dispersed: Laura M. Cha, HKEX Chairman, kicked off our Davos 2020 programme with an interview with CNBC, their first interview of the week! She talked about the resiliency of Hong Kong’s financial markets, how she was cautiously optimistic for the year ahead and the importance of sustainability and ESG in good business. You can read more and watch her performance in this update.

Then Cha, Chief Executive Charles Li, and Matt Chamberlain, the CEO of the London Metal Exchange met with key international publications the FT, Harvard Business Review, and The Daily Telegraph talking all things Hong Kong, capital markets, tech and their expectations for the week and year ahead. Charles Li was also invited by the WEF to give a special interview on why sustainability in business matters for the WEF’s own programming.

Laura Cha and Charles Li also joined the Community of Chairpersons session on “transformative technologies on the horizon”, which was an excellent discussion.

Monday concluded with working dinners for the full HKEX team; Matthew Chamberlain and James Fok attended the formal 50th anniversary reception and I attended a worldwide women’s leaders reception.

In amongst this hectic day we managed time for a bit of cross country skiing, some new snow boots, and the requisition of a number of famous blue Davos bobble hats!

Tuesday heralds a full schedule with Charles Li kicking off the day with a Bloomberg live interview followed by sessions on ‘shaping the future of the digital economy’, a special address by Vice Chairman of the PRC Han Zheng, and AI in financial services amongst the highlights.
